Although they were popularized by the Europeans in the 1800s, lithopanes and the general process were available for many years in China before spreading to other countries. Baron Paul de Bourguignon of Rubelles, France, is credited with bringing lithopanes into the public eye, and for extending the Chinese process beyond simple designs to full-fledged images and realistic artwork.
